How do I transfer my father’s car after his death?
Apply to the registering authority (RTO) for transfer of ownership on death. You will need the death certificate, the RC, insurance, PUC, and proof that you are the heir — usually a legal heir certificate or a NOC from the other heirs. This is an RTO filing. It is not a bank transmission and it is not something a succession certificate is built for.
What the RTO wants
Form for transfer of ownership on death of the owner, RC book, insurance valid in the heir’s name once transferred, death certificate, and the heirship proof that RTO asks for in that state.
If there are several heirs, the others typically sign a release so one person becomes the registered owner. An unsigned sibling is why these applications come back.
Insurance first
A policy in a dead person’s name does not automatically cover the person now driving the car. Speak to the insurer the same week you speak to the RTO.
Common questions
- Can I keep driving on the old RC?
- Not as a lasting plan. Transfer of ownership on death has a time window in the Motor Vehicles rules. Driving uninsured in the heir’s name is the expensive mistake.
