How do I find out what accounts and investments my father had?

Start with the paper: bank statements, passbooks, policy documents, and the deceased's email and phone, which carry statements and alerts. Then use their PAN, which unlocks the official trails — the income tax annual information statement lists every account that paid interest and every fund that paid a dividend, and the consolidated statements from the depositories and mutual fund registrars list every holding. Finally, search the unclaimed-asset portals: the RBI's UDGAM for bank deposits, the IEPF for shares, and the insurers' lost-policy services.

The tax records are the master list

The deceased's Form 26AS and annual information statement on the income tax portal show every institution that reported interest, dividends or a large transaction against their PAN. That surfaces bank accounts, deposits, mutual funds and shares the family never knew about. Their last few income tax returns list interest income and dividend income by source. Access needs the deceased's portal login, or a legal heir registration on the portal, which the tax department allows on the death certificate and proof of heirship.

Consolidated statements

Request a consolidated account statement from NSDL or CDSL, which lists every demat account and holding against the PAN, and from CAMS or KFintech, which lists every mutual fund folio across fund houses. The EPFO member portal shows the provident fund account against the UAN. Each of these is a single request that replaces contacting institutions one by one.

The unclaimed-asset portals

Bank deposits untouched for ten years are transferred to the Reserve Bank's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund, and can be searched by name across banks on the RBI's UDGAM portal. Shares whose dividends went unclaimed for seven years are transferred to the Investor Education and Protection Fund, searchable on the IEPF website by name and company. Insurers maintain lost-policy search facilities, and the IRDAI's Bima Bharosa portal handles unresolved claims. A search on each takes minutes and regularly finds money the family had no idea existed.
