How do I claim my father's unclaimed bank deposits through UDGAM?

UDGAM is the Reserve Bank's search portal for unclaimed deposits. A deposit untouched for ten years is transferred by the bank to the RBI's Depositor Education and Awareness Fund, but the depositor's or heirs' right to it never lapses. Search the portal by the deceased's name to find such deposits across the participating banks, then claim from the bank concerned with the death certificate and the usual heirship documents — the bank recovers the amount from the fund and pays you.

What UDGAM shows

Register on udgam.rbi.org.in with a mobile number, then search by the account holder's name, with optional filters such as PAN, date of birth or passport number to narrow the results. The portal lists matching unclaimed deposits at each participating bank, with the branch. It covers most major banks, and coverage has been expanding; a deposit at a bank not yet on the portal must be traced through that bank directly.

Claiming from the bank

The claim is made to the bank, not to the RBI. Approach the branch shown with the death certificate, the deceased's identity details, and the documents the bank's deceased-claim process requires — the nominee's KYC if there was a nominee, or the affidavit, NOC and indemnity route otherwise. The bank verifies, claims the amount back from the fund, and pays it with the interest the fund has accrued. The ten-year transfer changes where the money is held, not who is entitled to it.
