How do I claim an HDFC Bank account after death?
HDFC Bank pays a registered nominee against a claim form, the death certificate and the nominee’s KYC. Without a nominee it follows the same two-track rule as every scheduled bank: indemnity and heir papers below its threshold, and a court document only above it.
Start with nomination, not with court
Write to the home branch asking whether a nomination is registered and what document list applies to that account. Keep the reply. A verbal “bring a succession certificate” is not a policy.
If a nominee is on file, submit the deceased-depositor claim form, the death certificate and officially valid identity proof. The bank cannot lawfully pile a succession certificate on top of a valid nomination.
No nominee
HDFC Bank’s threshold cannot be lower than ₹15 lakh. Ask the branch for the figure in its current deceased-depositor policy.
Below the threshold: claim form, death certificate, claimant KYC, indemnity, and no-objection from heirs who are not claiming.
Above it: succession certificate, or whatever substitute the bank’s policy still names. Get that in writing before paying court fees.
Common questions
- Does HDFC Bank need a legal heir certificate if there is a nominee?
- No. Nomination plus death certificate and KYC is the complete nominee route. A legal heir certificate is a different document, used when there is no nominee or when another office (pension, revenue) has asked for it.
- Can I claim an HDFC account from another city?
- The home branch settles the claim. A relative at that city can carry the papers. An NRI usually sends attested copies and a mandate for someone in India to attend.
