The spouse first, for life or until remarriage. Then children, in order of birth, until they reach twenty-five or marry, and permanently for a child unable to earn a livelihood because of disability. Dependent parents in certain cases. Where the pension was already being paid jointly to the pensioner and spouse, the bank usually starts family pension to the spouse on the death certificate and a simple application, without a fresh sanction.

Otherwise the spouse submits Form 14, or the state's equivalent, to the pension sanctioning authority through the last office, with the death certificate, a copy of the pension payment order, the claimant's identity and bank proof, and a photograph. The department issues a fresh pension payment order in the family pensioner's name.

Private sector: the EPS pension

Under the Employees' Pension Scheme 1995, the widow or widower receives a monthly pension for life, and children under twenty-five receive a share. It is claimed from the EPFO on Form 10D through the last employer or online, with the death certificate and the claimant's KYC and bank proof. It is separate from — and additional to — the provident fund balance claimed on Form 20.
